For the past two years, I’ve been following recent trends in violence against women (VAW) in India and the US: reading about the background, talking to people, researching, writing, arguing. Along the way it became apparent that the focus was NOT really women, it was men. What captured my attention were the social and cultural forces that produced male abusers. Where had these men and boys come from? Teenagers, especially in India, were committing very hostile acts against women, often women they knew. These were boys of 13 and 14. Where were their mothers, after all? How and why were the increasingly emancipated women in these two countries continuing to raise such boys?

Last year I met actor and playwright Elizabeth Hess and decided that one way this topic could and should be shared was through theater. What would become SPOILED was hatched.

Fast forward significantly, through much information-sharing and Elizabeth’s first visit to India. Now we’re ready for the first reading. We would love interested listeners and would welcome feedback. Production is down the road.
